Leiden University Excellence Scholarships (LexS) - Scholars Desk

Brief Description:

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is open to outstanding non-EEA/non-EFTA students enrolling in a full-time master’s degree program at Leiden University.

Host Institution(s):

Leiden University in The Netherlands.

Level/Field of study:

All full-time Master's programs at Leiden University except LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at Leiden Law School.

Number of Awards:

The number and type of award of the scholarship depends on the budget available for each Faculty department.

Target group:

Non-EEA/non-EFTA* nationals (see details below)

Scholarship value/duration:

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program has 3 awards:

•  € 10.000 of the tuition fee
•  € 15.000 of the tuition fee
• Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee

The LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients must still submit ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application.

Eligibility:

Students must have obtained exceptional academic results in their previous schooling, which must be related to the Master's degree for which they are applying. As an example, the student is in the top 10% of graduates from his or her previous study program. It should be noted that evidence of ranking is not required; this information is provided solely to illustrate the level of competitiveness.

Applicants must hold a non-EEA/non-EFTA* passport and may be ineligible for study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering) in the Netherlands, except students applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programs or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, which have no nationality restrictions.

*All EU member states, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland)

Application Instructions:

To be considered for admission to a Master's program at Leiden University, you must first apply online. You must explicitly state in your application that you want to apply for the LExS scholarship in the scholarship area and upload your letter of motivation for the LExS award. The deadline for September programs is 1 February, whereas the deadline for February programs is 1 October.
